Go for it! 8A Unit 3 Section A 1a-1c

Teaching Ideology

National English Curriculum advocates quality-oriented education and all round learning. In class, Ss should be encouraged to discover the rules of the target language, master the language knowledge and grasp the language skills themselves while Teacher acts as a helper, prompter, and an organizer.

Analysis of the material

This material is from Go for it, Book 8A, Unit 3, and the topic is about talking about personal traits and comparing different people which is very close to Ss’ daily life. This teaching content of this lesson mainly includes the vocabulary, the comparative forms of those words and the sentence pattern about personal traits.

Analysis of the students

The students have learned English for so many years and they know a great number of words and expressions so that they are willing and have the ability to talk about their own traits and put the target language into practical use. However, due to their age, they are shy to talk in front of the class, which needs teacher to give them more chances and encourage them more.

Teaching objectives

By the end of the class, Ss will be able to

Ø Language competence:

l learn to use the new words like: “tall, short, thin, heavy, outgoing, loudly…”

l master the usage of the comparative forms: “taller, thinner, heavier, more outgoing…

l get familiar with the sentence pattern:

----That’s ××, isn’t it?   ----No, it isn’t. ×× is taller than ××.

Ø  Cultural awareness:

l have a clear understanding of yourself. Know how to introduce yourself and learn from the goodness from your friends.

Ø Thinking quality:

l study and practice cooperatively with their partners

l learn to put the target language into practical use.

Ø Learning capacity:

l make their own conversations to talk personal traits.

l role-play the dialog with fluency and appropriate emotion.

Language focuses and anticipated difficulties

Ø Language focuses:

Learn to use the key structure of “Tina is taller/thinner/heavier/more outgoing than Tara.” and practice the dialog: “--That’s Tina, isn’t it?   --No, it isn’t”

Ø Anticipated difficulties:

Ss may find it difficult to put the target language into practical use and get prepared for the grammar.

Teaching Procedure

Lead in and presentation

Activity 1: Self-check: How much have I changed?

T: Well, class. After one year’s studying, did you find that you have changed a lot? Now, let’s do a self-check and describe yourself how much you have changed. Now, I’ll do the self-check first. I was short but now I am tall. I was quiet but now I am outgoing. (write on the Bb.)Please read after me. I used to sing quietly but now I can sing loudly.

Well, I’ll give you two minutes to think about it. Ok, any volunteers?

Ss:…

Intention: Help Ss review the words like “tall, short” and learn the new words such as “outgoing”. Let Ss know the opposite meaning of the target words in the sentence.

Practice

Activity 2: Finish 1a Match each word with its opposite.

T: Class, We can find that we changed a lot, right? From short to tall, from quiet to outgoing. We are different now!

Now, open your books. Focus on 1a: match each word with its opposite.

Let’s do it together!

Intention: Finish the exercise on the book and consolidate the knowledge we have just learned.

Activity 3: Let’s compare!

T: Class, here are my two friends, Peter and Paul. They are twins.

Could you find some difference between Peter and Paul?

What can you see first? Let me give you one hint. Focus on their height.

We can find Peter is tall and Paul is short. So Peter is taller than Paul.

T: Terrific! So on the contrary, Paul is shorter than Peter.

T: Super! Any other differences?

Ss:….

T: Peter is heavier than Paul. On the contrary, Paul is thinner than Peter.

Here, we change y into ier. And thin we double n and add er.

These are the special form.

Intention: Help Ss learn comparative forms based on the known words with pictures and the context.

Activity 4: Test your memory: Find out who is Paul.

T: Class, look at these two pictures. Just now we have learned the difference between, Peter and Paul. Could you memorize them without your books?

T: Now, let’s test your memory!  Is that Paul? How do you know that?

Ss: ….

Intention:Practice the dialogue by using the target language.

Activity 5: Compare another pair of twins.

T: Class, let’s compare another twin Tara and Tina. Focus on their appearance and ability. And then fill in the blanks. Can you have a try?

Ss:….

T: Terrific! What else? What about their personality?

Ss:….

T: Super! Tina is more outgoing than Tara.

Here we add more in front of outgoing because outgoing has three syllables, more than two syllables. So we add more. This is another special form.

Intention: Help Ss learn comparative forms based on the known words with pictures and the context.

Activity 6: Test your memory: Find out who is Tara.

T: Class, just now we have learned the difference between Tara and Tina

Could you memorize and find out who is Tara?

T: Now, let’s test your memory!

  That’s Tara, isn’t it?

Ss: ….

Intention:Practice the dialogue by using the target language.

Activity 7: Role-play the conversation.

T: Class, look at the picture and role-play the conversation.

First, I would like to give you one example.

Ss:…

T: I’ll give you two minutes to get prepared with your partner. Then I’ll ask some pairs to act it out without your books .Clear?Ok, please take your time.

Intention: Put the target language into practical use.

Activity 8 Finish 1b: Listen and number the pairs of twins in the picture [1-3]

Production

Activity 9: Play a guessing game.

T: Class, after so many activities, you must be tired. Now let’s have a guessing game to cheer up! Please work in groups of 4. First please figure out who is your best friend in class. And then check who is smarter, funnier, etc. between you and your best friend in class. Let your group mates ask questions and you can only answer “yes” or “no”.

Intention: Guide Ss to communicate in the target language and achieve language skills in the guessing game.

Homework

Compulsory: Keep the new words and sentence pattern in mind.

Optional: Compare your mother with your father and find the difference.
